US Open Golf Info
On October 4th, 1895, the first U.S. Open was conducted by the United States Golf Association on a nine hole course at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island. The first U.S. Open was viewed as kind of a side-show because it was held during the same week and on the same course as the amateur championship. Horace Rawlins, a 21-year-old pro was the surprise victor at that first tournament. Rawlins won $150 for a prize and also received a gold medal and got custody of the U.S. Open Cup for a year. The Open still did not rise in popularity until Americans really started dominating the game and the rest of the world took notice. Another boom in popularity came when a young Georgia amateur by the name of Bobby Jones won the tournament four times in a span of seven years. Spectator tickets were sold for the first time in 1922. As years went by, it became obvious that the world's best players would be defined by how they competed in the rigors of the U.S. open. Legend Ben Hogan won four times from '48 to '53. Jack Nicklaus also was a four-time winner after winning as a rookie in 1962. In 1977, the U.S. Open grew once again when CBS decided to broadcast the final two rounds. ESPN also decided to air the first two rounds starting in 1982. The tournament's popularity has continued to grow throughout the years, due in large part to the fact that the pros play on some of America's toughest courses, making even the most seasoned pros look like weekend warriors at times.
