Indiana Pacers Info

Its no wonder the basketball Mecca of Indiana has the team setting the pace in the East. The Pacers are running on all cylinders and blowing the doors off the competition. These terrors of the Central play an exciting style. Indiana’s Reggie Miller, Ron Artest, and Jermaine O’Neal have man-handled the East. The team may even become the first Eastern team since the glory days of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls to claim a championship. Do not miss the push to the franchise’s first championship since the ABA days.

The Pacers came to the NBA for the 1976-1977 season after a highly successful run in the ABA where the team won three ABA Championships. Success did not come that easily in the NBA. The franchise recorded only one winning season in their first 13 seasons in the NBA. A couple of high draft picks in consecutive years helped to turn around the Pacers' losing ways.

The 1987-1988 draft brought Reggie Miller to the team, and the 1988-1989 draft saw the Pacers pick up Rik Smits. The Pacers played around .500 ball for the early 1990s, but their fortunes turned for the better in 1994. From 1994 to 2000, the Pacers grabbed two Central Division Titles, reached the Conference Finals five times, and made it to the NBA Finals in 2000. A big part of the team's success can be attributed to Larry Bird who coached Indiana from 1997 until 2001.

Now, the Pacers are led by Jermaine O'Neal, the volatile Ron Artest and the long-time staple of the Pacers Reggie Miller. The team is trying to overcome a disappointing 2003 playoff run in which they were eliminated in the first round. The Pacers seem poised and determined to return to the playoffs to win their first NBA Championship.

August 31, 2000 -- Talk about hindsight being 20/20. The Indiana Pacers deal Dale Davis to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jermaine O’Neal and Joe Kleine. Experts think this move is one of desperation for the Pacers, who are trying to get something for a disgruntled Davis - O’Neal hadn’t even averaged five points a game for the Blazers. However, in their first seasons with their new teams, O’Neal averages more points and rebounds a game than Davis. The rest is history.

June 2, 2000 - After years of playing second fiddle to the Chicago Bulls, the Indiana Pacers win the Eastern Conference for the first time in franchise history by defeating the New York Knicks 93-80 in Game 6. Reggie Miller continues his string of clutch performances, leading the way with 34 points.

Arena: Conseco Fieldhouse
Championships: None
Head Coach: Rick Carlisle

The Indiana Pacers joined the NBA for the 1976-77 season as one of four former American Basketball Association franchises to cross over when the two leagues merged. The three-time ABA champions struggled from the beginning in the NBA, posting only one winning season in their first 13 NBA campaigns. The team finally began to play .500 ball in the early 1990s. By mid-decade, the Pacers had become one of the top clubs in the East. From 1994-2000, they reached the conference finals five times, won two Central Division titles and advanced to the NBA Finals in 2000. Some of the greatest players to wear the Pacer uniform include George McGinnis, Mel Daniels, Roger Brown and Reggie Miller. The Pacers of today are led by Reggie Miller. With the talent they have, the Pacers will contend for the Eastern Conference championship.
