Detroit Pistons Info

The block party keeps on rocking in Detroit like the parents are gone for good. The Pistons’ defense has the East locked down. The Pistons have allowed the fewest points of any team in the league this season. Keeping the ball out of the hoop is a full time job in the Motor City. But Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace and Tayshaun Prince take their lunch pales to work every night. Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups round out a loaded line up. See the Pistons as the team looks to avenge its Eastern Conference Finals loss of a year ago with new coach Larry Brown.

The Pistons organization started out in the NBL as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. This team then joined the NBA in the 1949-1950 season. George Yardley anchored the team in the late 19s while leading the league in scoring in 1957-1958. The team's best player of the early 1970s became Bob Lanier.

Despite these great players, the team still couldn't put together winning seasons. They even hired current ESPN college basketball commentator Dick Vitale in 1978. Not even the eccentric Vitale could lead the Pistons to winning seasons. In 1980 the Pistons hit the jackpot by selecting Isiah Thomas in the draft. Between 1983 and 1986 the Pistons also picked up Joe Dumars and Coach Chuck Daly. They teamed with Bill Laimbeer to become the "Bad Boys" of the NBA throughout the rest of the 1980s and in to the early 1990s. The Pistons won back-to-back NBA Titles in the 1988-1989, and 1989-1990 seasons with their suffocating defense and physical play.

The "Bad Boys" are gone, but the team is now led by Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton and Ben Wallace. The Pistons maintain the core of a team that lost in the Eastern Conference Finals last year to the Nets. This season they hope to take the next step to the NBA Finals.
