Colorado Avalanche Info

The Avalanche started out as the Quebec Nordiques of the World Hockey Association in 1972. In 1979, the Nordiques joined the NHL. Success did not come to the franchise until it moved to Denver, Colorado in 1996 and changed its name to the Avalanche. In that same year the “Avs” became the first team to win the Stanley Cup in their first year after moving to a new city. Stars Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, and Peter Forsberg led the Avs to their second Stanley Cup in 2001.

The next Stanley Cup could come soon with stars Peter Forsberg, Joe Sakic, Rob Blake, Teemu Selanne, and Paul Kariya headlining one of the best offensive line-ups in recent history. This could be the year.

ALL-TIME RECORD 1152-1301-272-14

June 10, 1996 - In only their first year in Denver, the Colorado Avalanche complete a sweep of the Florida Panthers with a triple-overtime 1-0 victory to give the franchise its first Stanley Cup, and the city of Denver its first major championship. The game lasted over five hours, making it the third-longest game in finals history. The Colorado franchise spent its first 15 years in the NHL as the Quebec Nordiques and never made it past the conference finals.

June 30, 1992 - The Quebec Nordiques agree to a trade with the Flyers that sends disgruntled phenom Eric Lindros to Philadelphia for Peter Forsberg, Mike Ricci, Steve Duchesne and three other players, two first-round draft choices and $15 million. Lindros was drafted by Quebec, but refused to play for them. This trade sets the groundwork for the Colorado Avalanche’s two Stanley Cup-winning teams.

Colorado Avalanche Team Notes
Arena: Pepsi Center
Stanley Cup Wins: 1996, 2001
Head Coach: Tony Granato
2002-2003 Season Finish: 105 points, 1st - Northwest Division

This season, the expectations in Colorado are as high as the Rocky Mountains, and as hard to reach as Pike’s Peak in hockey skates. But if any team is up to the challenge, it’s this Avalanche team. The biggest question in Colorado will be whether the play of goalie David Aebisher can carry the Avs through the postseason as it has throughout the regular season. With the retirement of Patrick Roy, management in Colorado lost more than a gold watch. The Avs lost the goalie that brought two Stanley Cups to the Rockies. Aebisher has played well under the bright lights, notching more than 30 wins. Aebisher and Avs fans everywhere can count on a strong team around the goalie. To put the clamps on opponents, the defense is a mixed bag of familiar names and new faces. Long-time Avs Robert Blake and Adam Foote will provide stops in aid of Aebisher. The team also added Karlis Skraslins from Nashville and signed Jean-Michael Liles from Michigan State University to bolster the defensive force. The Avs are led on offense by Joe Sakic, Alex Tanguay, Peter Forsberg and Milan Hejduk. Former-Ranger Matthew Barnaby and former-Coyote Chris Gralton are new additions that will add points on the Avs’ attack. Prior to the season, Colorado also nabbed Main Mallard Paul Kariya from Anaheim and Teemu Selanne from San Jose to help the offense. The team is ready. The goalie is proven in the regular season. Let the climb to the Cup begin.
