Tampa Bay Lightning Info

The Lightning became an NHL franchise starting in the 1992-1993 season. The team has had some up-and-down seasons since their inception. Players that have donned the Tampa Bay jersey include Daren Puppa and Vincent Lacavalier. Lacavalier was the youngest player in the history of the NHL to become a full-time captain at the age of 19.

In 1996, the Lightning played their first game in their new arena, the Ice Palace. Tampa won the inaugural game in the Palace beating the Rangers 5-2.

In 2004, the Lightning will rely on the play of Martin St. Louis, Brad Richards and Cory Stillman to lead them back to the playoffs for the 2nd straight year.

ALL-TIME RECORD 257-358-104-21

October 7, 1992 - In the first game in franchise history, the Tampa Bay Lightning defeat the Chicago Blackhawks at Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds by a score of 7-3. Forward Chris Kontos outscores the Original Six team by himself, scoring four goals.

April 3, 2003 - The Tampa Bay Lightning clinch their first-ever division title after the Ottawa Senators defeat the Washington Capitals. The Lightning helped out their own cause the day before, defeating the Montreal Canadiens, 2-1. Goalie Nikolai Khabibulin made 26 saves and extended his unbeaten streak to a career-best 16 games.

Head Coach: John Tortorella
2001-2002 Season Finish: 69pts, 3rd Southeast Division

For those disbelievers still stuck in 1992, the Tampa Bay Lightning are in the Stanley Cup finals! As shocking as it may seem, the team has the best record in the Eastern Conference and the top spot in the playoffs. As the Islanders, the Canadiens and the Flyers learned the hard way, the Bolts play an exciting brand of hockey that is as easy on the eyes as it is the win column. Responding well to all the doubting critics, Tampa Bay struck into the postseason with 106 points. The electricity in Tampa is now at full power with goalie Nikolai Khabibulin and Tampa’s explosive offense lead by Martin St. Louis, Vincent Lecavalier, and Brad Richards chasing the Stanley Cup. Tampa Bay is lighting up the NHL this year. Although lightning never strikes twice, this team is hot enough to win the Cup.
