Wimbledon Info

Wimbledon is one of the world's oldest and most famous tennis tournaments. It started in 1877 as an amateur tournament, with only one event: Gentlemen's Singles. Since those days, it has grown into a sporting spectacle that attracts hundreds of thousands of tennis fans from all over the world to London's All England Lawn Tennis Club.

The Wimbledon Tennis Tournament is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious sporting events throughout the world. From is origins at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet club, the tournament has grown from a small, almost secret event to a worldwide phenomenon. The first event took place in 1877, but was only a men's singles championship. Spencer Gore won the event with almost 200 spectators paying one schilling a piece to watch the event.

As the turn of the century approached, more and more players from overseas were coming to compete in the event. In 1905, May Sutton became the first player from overseas to win a championship when she captured the women's single crown. Norman Brooks of Australia became the first man to do so in 1907. As the 1950's started, it became evident that there was a need for reform due to all the players the Club ruled to be professionals. In 1959, then chairman Herman David made a proposal to have the tournament "open" to all. This idea was rejected, and it was not until 1969 that this idea was finally accepted. The total prize money for that year totaled a little over 67,000 pounds.

In recent years, many long-standing records have been broken. In 1980, Bjorn Borg became the first player since 1880 to win five consecutive championships. Five years later, Boris Becker became the youngest player and the first German ever to win a singles title at Wimbledon when he was just 17. Martina Navratilova won her sixth consecutive championship in 1987, and Pete Sampras won his record seventh in 2000. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club is still striving to make improvements to this day to ensure that Wimbledon remains the legendary event that it is.
