US Open Tennis Info
The US Open was started as the US National Singles Championship in 1881 as an entertainment diversion for high society. After events were added and several tournaments were taking place in several places around the country, they were all consolidated in 1968 into the US Open, the largest tennis tournament in the United States. That year it offered $100,000 to the 96 men and 63 women that entered. It now attracts over 600 competitors with a prize of over $16 million.
The U.S. Open, which celebrates its 122nd anniversary this year, was not always the huge international event that it is today. It had very humble beginnings when it started at the Newport Casino in Newport, RI in August of 1881. It originally started as the U.S. National Singles Championship. Only members of the club were allowed to enter the tournament, which allowed Newport to essentially be the tennis mecca of the United States for nearly 35 years. Many changes were made over the year such as doubles play beginning in 1886, and women's play starting a year later.
Through the first half of the 20th century, the tournament was spread out all over the country with different regionals be held across the country. The Open Era began in 1968 with all five different regions being consolidated, and moved to a central location. The West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, Queens, New York began hosting the event and offered $100,000 of prize money that first year to 96 men and 63 women. Today, the event offers over 17 million dollars in prize money and is widely regarded as one of the top tennis events in the whole world.
